Apple now believes that the 2015 12-inch MacBook is vintage and has added it to its list of vintage products on its website.
The device was discontinued in 2019 and ultimately never lived up to the expectations placed upon it. When it was first released in 2015, the MacBook was expected to be a smaller and lighter version of the MacBook Air, practically replacing the 11-inch MacBook Air that hasn’t existed for some time.
With a price starting at $1,299, the MacBook wasn’t cheap by any stretch.
The relocation to vintage status implies that the MacBook from 2015 can no longer be repaired at Apple stores or by Apple Authorized service Providers. You can learn much more about Apple’s processes on the Apple website.
Products are considered vintage when Apple stopped distributing them available much more than 5 and less than 7 years ago.
Apple does in some cases offer extended repair options for select devices that are on its vintage list however, so it might be worth reaching out if you have a device that needs attention. Otherwise, it might be time to upgrade to one of those very good M1 MacBook Airs instead.
With the M1 chip proving so popular there are continued rumors of the MacBook making a return. The chip would certainly make an improvement to the poor performance that plagued the MacBook throughout its lifecycle.
